We all have to make choices.
The Collector believes that he has choice in everything that he does and yet he is perpetually buffeted by infinite variations of possibility, all of which combine to give him the illusion of a path and of free will. So it is hardly surprising that when he sets out in search of a new story, he finds that his destination is not the place that he originally intended.
The landscape is cold and the people are brutish and have an appalling lack of personal hygiene. The language is churlish and the customs are basic: this is a place where politeness gets you killed.
As the huge number of everyday events unravel around him, the Collector is drawn increasingly into a world of unfolding mystery.
